Volunteer Divers Pass the 800 Mark

Number 800 is a schoolteacher from Frederiksted who certified two years ago specifically to join the program. She did her checkout dive on Perseverance Reef last Saturday and planted her first coral the same morning.

Eight hundred volunteer divers means every one of our 38 monitoring sites gets surveyed monthly without a single paid dive — the entire field program runs on people who show up on their day off.

Orientation sessions run Tuesday through Saturday at the Coki Point base, and you don’t need to be a diver: for every volunteer in the water there are three on shore making the work possible.
